KnowRight conferences have been held since 1995; KR2010 is already the 6th. Traditionally KnowRight focuses on the interaction between Intellectual Property Rights, Information Rights, ethical issues, civil society and information technology.
Unusual for an intellectual property conference, it originates from a computing society and was an early mark for the necessary change in IP law due to new technologies in the context of the Information Society and a progressively electronic environment. Therefore, KnowRight is best suited to be a forum between informatics, IP lawyers, lobbyists, managers, administrators and citizens in the knowledge economy. IP law and data protection law have to somehow balance contradictory expectations of business and civil society.
KnowRight2010 will be organised by the Austrian Computer Society OCG, supported by the German Computing Society GI, the German Society for Law and Informatics DGRI, the related research groups at the Universities of Vienna (Centre for Computers and Law) and Krakow (Intellectual Property Law Institute) and will take place in Vienna, Austria. KnowRight will be a forum for discussions between business, civil society and adminstration organised and mediated by academia. The host will be the University of Vienna.
All relevant groups of the public, the business and the civil society are welcome; BSA and FFII have already agreed to provide substantive input for KnowRight2010 discussions.
Academics, practitioners and researchers from throughout Europe and the United States will meet to discuss a broad range of issues arising in the context of the Information Society and a progressively electronic environment. Participation of a wide spectrum of vested interests will ensure a lively debate on issues such as standards and intellectual property, data protection and web 2.0, data retention, access to information, computer crime, digital libraries, e-commerce, e-government, e-justice, electronic civil society, free speech and homeland security, IP and competition law, IP and development agenda, IP and innovation, IP and public policy considerations, new challenges for the enforcement of IPRs, open source, open content, preserving the public domain and rule of law in cyberspace.
